What is Starship?

The fully reusable rocket designed to carry humans to Mars — and reshape the economics of spaceflight.

Published Jan 12, 20258 min readSpace

Starship(Rocket) is the largest rocket ever built. Developed by SpaceX(Company), it is designed to be fully reusable — a first for orbital-class vehicles. The company was founded by Elon Musk(Person) in 2002 with the explicit goal of enabling human life on Mars(Planet).

Why full reusability matters

Rockets have historically been discarded after a single flight. Reusing the hardware is what turns spaceflight from an expedition into a form of transportation.

Starship is powered by the Raptor Engine(Engine), a full-flow staged-combustion engine that burns methane and liquid oxygen.

Missions

Starship is central to the Artemis Program(Mission), which will use it as a human landing system for the Moon(Moon).

The goal is not to build a better rocket. It is to make life multi-planetary.
