Graphics cards turned out to be spectacularly good at the parallel arithmetic that neural networks require. CUDA(Platform) made that easy to program.

Today NVIDIA hardware runs the training and inference for OpenAI(Company), Google(Company), Microsoft(Company), and most of the rest of the industry.
